The fifth National Workplace Wellbeing Day is set to take place on Friday, 12th April. Last year, over 700 companies signed up to promote employee health, and this figure is expected to increase this year as the trend for improving health and wellbeing continues to grow. With a variety of initiatives planned that include the “Lunchtime Mile”, mindfulness sessions and healthy food options. These are great ideas that should be encouraged in all workplaces, and Ibec deserves credit for instigating this event.
There are many factors that contribute to good health, so why not use this day to consider health in its broadest sense? The World Health Organisation defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” When we look at this definition, we can see that good health has social, mental and physical aspects.
MAKING THE CASE FOR ALCOHOL AWARENESS
Alcohol is associated with a wide range of impacts from mental health difficulties, poor sleep, and weight gain to the development of serious health conditions including at least seven types of cancers (including breast and bowel) and high blood pressure. With this in mind, awareness of the HSE weekly low-risk guidelines is crucial to help promote good health.
Yet, the Drinkaware Index 2019 revealed that just 2% of the Irish population know the low-risk guidelines. The same research also found that almost half (48%) of Irish drinkers are drinking at a level that puts their health at risk. Without information on standard drink measures and the guidelines, people don’t have a clear understanding of what misuse is or how at risk they may be.
